Partitioning a small HD

Hi all!

I just want your advice here.
I have a laptop booting now in Win2000 and I want to make it dual boot with Debian. Unfortunately, I only have a 12GB HD. Do you think it's too small? Shoudl I go for a very small distro, like LFS?

Any opinion or experience to share are welcome!

I have run windows 2000 on a 2 gig HD before and actually managed to install a few programs along with it. And even the bigger distros like Mandrake and Fedora with all the included packages installed are no bigger than 5 & 1/2 gigs.
