Partition Size Ratios
 

I'm preparing to install SuSe 9.2 on a volume that has 18.63GBs, which I know is more than necessary. I want to make 4 partitions: /, /USR, /Home, and /Swap. I'm not interested in making any of these minimal in size, except perhaps the Swap, for which I plan to set aside 1GB to balance my 512MBs of RAM. My question is how much of the remaining 17.63GBs to give to the remaining partitions. I want there to be plenty of room for growth in each.

What do u plan to use this system for?

It's just a regular Linux installation, within a multiboot system. No servers or anything special. I probably will install everything on the DVD, if for no other reason but curiousity.

Well, my system is debian, and Ive got everything installed under / (ie. no partitions)

I run a pretty current system, with KDE and GNOME; also kernel development, all the libraries, etc.

My /usr is about 3gb (a little less)

my swap is 512K

If i was you, i'd set /home to about 10GB maybe a bit more.

I kind of want to have at least twice as much space as I need to install the entire DVD within the appropriate partitions. If I give /Home 10GBs, /usr 6GBs, and /swap 1GB, that leave almost nothing for /. Obviously, I need to pare down the other partitions a bit to leave enough room, but I'm not sure how much that is.

On a related issue, after playing some muscial chairs with my XP partition, it is now the second partition on my first disk, and unlike previous installs it marked itself as Boot. The location that I intend to use to install Linux is in the first partition, ahead of XP...will that cause any problems for LILO?

Re: partitioning: Just install everything into one partition. Or upgrade your storage :)

If I wanted to install everything into one partition, I wouldn't have posted my question. The storage that I have is sufficient for an installation of SuSe, I only need to know how to distribute the partitions.
I don't intend to mess around with XP, my question was whether the installation of Linux in the first partition would effect XP

/ 3 gb
/usr 5 gb
/swap 500mb
/home 9gb

/3GB is the number that I really needed, thanks alot.
