Partition (or Dolphin, KDE) won't allow writing to drive. KDE

I am using a new install of Kubuntu 10.04 LTS.
My system is a 64-bit AMD desktop.

I use a small partition for my entire Kubuntu install, and use separate, larger partitions for my media and work files.

I opened up Dolphin (my KDE file manager) via GUI, navigated to my media partition, and attempted to create a new folder by
right-click->
Create New->
New Folder-> etc

The Create New in the menu is ghosted out, as if I have no permission to access it.

How can I write files to the drive?

Go easy, I am NOT intuitive when using the console!

Thanks!

Open Dolphin as root

Code:

kdesu dolphin

Code:

neally@honeybear:/media/disk-1$ kdesu dolphin
kdesu: command not found

By the way, when I navigated to the drive via gui (before I started this thread), KDE Sudo dialog box popped up and asked me for root password. Would I not already be root after entering the password??

You also can try su enter key
Roots password enter key
dolphin enter

Bhakta Neal 05-17-2011 02:33 PM

Code:

neally@honeybear:~$ su
Password:
su: Authentication failure

Something is NOT right here. My password is not entered wrong.
????????????????????

You should. Not sure what is going on with your install. So maybe

Description:
Open Dolphin as Root is a basic service menu for KDE4 and Dolphin 1.2.x which will create an Open as Root menu when right-clicking directories.

To install it, just copy the open_as_root.desktop file into ~/.kde/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus, where ~ is your home directory.
If you have autologin enabled. That might also be the root cause of your problem also. Just guessing though.

Roky,
How do I find the Open As Root file?

rokytnji 05-17-2011 02:40 PM

Usually it is in /etc/sudoers or /etc/shadow.

When I click on the "Download" button on the site referenced above, it just taes me to a very plain text. Is that what I will copy?

Bhakta Neal 05-17-2011 02:45 PM

There is no directory
/ServiceMenus

I shouldn't be posting to this thread because I don't run KDE. But If Kde has a run in menu like gexec. You can try opening the run box and typing in

Code:

dolphin
tick the box that says run as root. Type in password when prompted. And Dolphin should
open as root. Not sure why your password for root is no good either. You can reset root password by booting your live Kubuntu CD.

Just type in at live cd boot screen

Code:

single
when you get to command line boot up then

Code:

passwd
to change or renter your password for root.

This will not work for you, in *buntu the root-account is not enabled.

Thanks Tobi
What do I do now?

Bhakta Neal 05-17-2011 03:06 PM

I am getting more lost, confused, frustrated, and closer to a Windows re-install, the more I type to this site. Who can help me, not just tell me the correct (or incorrect) commands, but explain what it means and why I am doing it?
