Partition my computer to run Linux

I want to run Linux and windows. How can I partition my computer without erasing my stuff from the hard dive? It seems to be the only way to run Linux.

Please help.

thanks

If you're still on Winsucks you can partition your hard-disk without destroying all of your data on your Winsucks partition with partition magic.

You didn't say which distribution you are going to install. If you haven't decided yet, the Mandrake Linux installation program can resize your windows partition. I installed it on my HP Laptop (Windows XP Home Edition) and it resized the NTFS partition with no problem. I just needed to select the Manual Partitioning Option.
