Partition Magic: How to install Linux?

Okay,

Im new to linux, and to linuxquestions.com.. So first, let me say hi to all of you.. Second.. I have partitioned my harddrive into 2 peices with Partition Magic 8.. I was wondering, how do I install Mandrake 9 on that other partition.. I don't want to install mandrake because it might overwrite my XP Pro.. Any help would be appreciated! By the way.. FreeBSD had an option to choose which partition to use.. Does mandrake have it?

Mandrake version: 9
Part. Magic: 8
XP Version: 2600
Style: FAT32

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
If that helps, great :D

I'm not 100% sure about Mandrake but the majority of linux installers will recognize the different partitions. Just make sure you don't install Mandrake on the Fat32 partition.

You can either use Partition Magic or let the installer create the partitions. If you select the expert mode you have complete control to select existing or create new partitions.

as said by "Chrashed Again", just boot from your red hat cd and install the software. My distro recognized the partitions from itself and it automatticaly chose the right partition with the right filesystem.

Don't worry about overwriting a windows partitions, i'm sure you have to click a couple times on next and yes before it'll install ;)

Hi, I have Mandrake 9.0 and previously I had it on the same HD together with WIndows.

1. PartitionMagick your HD.

2. Reboot with Mandrake Installation CD 1.

Installer will start. The process is fairly much automatic. You can do all in a recommended mode (never mind - you will be able to configure whatver you want later). At certain moment installer will show you existing partitions, and will ask you which one you want to use for your Mandrake. Normally the defaul choice is correct, and you better don't modify it UNLESS for some reason Mandrake want's to install on the same partition where your Windows resides.

If everything is fine, click Next. Installer will ask you which partition you want to format. MAKE SURE you don't format your window partition at this point! Normally the default choice is correct.

Click Next. Follow the instructions of the installer. When you are prompted to choose the user and a defaul desktop, select KDE - the nearest to what you are used to and the easiest way to learn Linux (later you will probably want to use WindowMaker or IceWM because they are a lot faster).
