partition magic

is partitioning with partition magic a good idea if i want to format a partition? i know this is probably one of the stupidest questions u have ever heard

Sure, it's fine. Make sure you back up your files before any re partitioning though. And, no I have read worse, but still, no question is a stupid question, because if you are asking it, that means at least 1 person doesn't know.

Anyway, many others use that and it works fine. If you are using Linux and want to use something just for that, you could check out Parted

or if you plan to dual boot, and are currently using windows, and are also planning to install mandrake, there's actually a full blown partition magic clone that comes with it, called DiskDrake. It runs as part of the installer, so when you get to partitioning your drives, you get a nice (and free) PartitionMagicalike to shore down your windows, and put in your linux partitions.
I would be surprised if other distros didn't have a similar thing.
