Unhappy Partition Check Problems with Install

I'm trying to Install Mandrake Linux 9.0 onto a Viglen laptop with 20Gb HD on which I already had a fresh install of Win98. I then tried to install mandrake with the intention of creating a dual boot system and alocated 8Gb to Win and 12Gb to Linux. However When booting up it gets as far as the Partition check then displays:

/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 p2 p3 p4 <

Then it just freezes, I've tried reinstalling but the same thing happens. Any ideas???

Have you tried with another distro? I have no idea what that lessage means, it might be worth noting down the lines above it too, to see if anything went wrong.

Sometimes simply using another distro can help solve issues like this.
