The OP is obviously hoping that folk on here who have used both Kali and Parrot will be able to contribute their opinions. Given the level of depth of interaction with the forum by users of both distros, I'm not sure that this will happen. However, to the OP, I say, welcome to LQ and, if it applies, welcome to Linux. Try both distros and form your own opinion, based on your goals and experience, as to which is your preferred distro. Then come back and let us know so that it may be of use to others.

The first question to ask the OP is "for what?" For what purposes will you be using these distros? That aside...

I would personally say Parrot. I will say that my reasons are meant partly in good humour and to be taken with a pinch of salt.

1. Kali is harder for newbies than Parrot.
2. Kali is not a desktop distro, it is only used for pen testing and is meant to be run as root in most cases. One can get away with using Parrot as a desktop OS [though there are better ones, in my opinion].
3. Many people will take you less seriously if you ask for help with Kali on LQ. Since it is only meant to be used by professionals, it's unlikely that people who use it in their work [i.e. its intended userbase] would need to ask the majority of questions that get asked here [kind of like the 'install Gentoo' meme].

There are many people on LQ who ask questions about Kali when they just don't need to be running it. It's not a general purpose OS. If you want to learn about Linux, you want a desktop OS and you're just starting, try Mint. If you want to mess around with security tools, try Parrot: it's easier to get up and running, gives you some interesting security tools - and you may get taken slightly more seriously [i.e. if you were a professional pen tester you probably wouldn't even have started this thread].

Backlitso, there's literally hundreds of actively developed Linux distributions out there; why have you chosen to compare only two of them?

fwiw, I have written about parrotOS before, for example here:
Quote:
things i wrote about parrot linux earlier:

Quote:
parrot os seems to be not very well maintained, but its combination of a beautiful desktop and the security buzzword seems to attract many users.
i have stumbled upon quite many complaints about parrotos, and all i can say is take it to the maintainers. it's not fair that others should fix their distro, which seems hardly more than a vanity affair.

Quote:
ParrotOS has gained some popularity because it combines a well-polished desktop with buzzwords like securicy and privacy.
from reports like this one i get the impression that it's not quite stable.
i think the (mostly) sole developer is totally overwhelmed by all the help requests and bug reports coming in, and keeps directing people to debian resources.
however, parrotOS is not debian.

so far i haven't seen anything that would change my opinion.

Personally I tried Kali - a lot applications. tools I even dont know how to use. Kali by itself without enough knowledge offers not much in terms of learning. One cannot learn all these things about security only because using Kali. Mhm, As I well remember the older Backtrace was better suited for such activity like self-learning. But maybe I am wrong with this.

Edit: sorry I missed correct name: Backtrack of course not Backtrace as I originally posted.
