Pardus 2011 how to install pan newsreader
 

Hi,
although i've been using Linux for a couple of years it's always been Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint environments which i can just about find my way arround in.
Because i wanted to try something new and was unhappy with the last development in Ubuntu i've looked arround and decided to try my luck with a KDE based distro, Pardus came accross well in the reviews.
So, i'm now in Pardus but can't find my "trusted newsreader (binaries/nzb's)" PAN in the repo's.
To be honest i can't find an awefull lot in the repo's, i have tried adding a couple of German based repositories but dissapointingly still no Pan.
Google, normally a mine of information has let me down aswell, so now i'm asking the Linux community for a little shared wisdom.
If anyone could shed a little light for me, i'd be really gratefull - especially if you'd be kind enough point out how to install Pan if it can be found.
Pretty shamefull when you realise just how little you really know when stepping out of the comfort zone, so my excuses in advance.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Since Pardus has its own package format, I'm afraid it's going to be compiling, not that that's so bad. If you've never done it before, the README file in the package will tell you what to do.

I think you're lucky to be able to download anything: I've been testing Pardus, and it kept starting with no network, and I couldn't find any way to turn it on.

Just remember that packages you compile yourself will not be tracked by the package manager, which might cause dependency problems.

Thanks for your replies - work has kept me away from tackling this for the last few days, i hope to be able to take a look later today or tomorrow.
David, thanks for the tip. I'll see how it goes, hopefully i'll be able to stumble through this.
As to your network issues, i myself didn't encounter any problems at all. My Linux box is connected to a wired network en worked out of the box. Having googled a bit i see that i may have been lucky.

I installed Pardus 2011 without too much bother - hung halfway through onthe first attempt but a second go went without a hitch (i reformatted my partition before installing the second time). The setup wizard "Kaptan" walked me through some appearence/style choices and allowed me to choose wich menu options i wanted. Other than that, no problems. My network was automatically detected - win7 laptop/linux media player and nas all visable and with internet.

I followed the Readme and Install text included with the source code. ( https://github.com/lostcoder/pan2 )
Paying attention to the Requirements ( http://pan.rebelbase.com/requirements/ ).
Requirements
Pan 0.90 and newer (the 2006 rewrite):

gtk+ version 2.16.0 or higher
gmime version 2.4.0 or higher
gtkspell version 2.0.7 or higher (optional)
pcre 5.0 or higher - Pan 0.133 and older


Downloaded pan-0.134.tar.gz and pan-0.134.tar.bz2 ( from http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/re.../0.134/source/ )
to my home/Downloads.

Compiled the source as per the Install instructions and all seems to have gone well...


The simplest way to compile this package is:
xtract with: tar -xzvf

1. `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type
`./configure' to configure the package for your system. If you're
using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type
`sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute
`configure' itself.

Running `configure' takes awhile. While running, it prints some
messages telling which features it is checking for.

2. Type `make' to compile the package.

3. Optionally, type `make check' to run any self-tests that come with
the package.

4. Type `make install' to install the programs and any data files and
documentation.

5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the
source code directory by typing `make clean'.

Program starts, i can edit server details and settings/preferences.
But, when importing a NZB file - i do very briefly see decoding starting, but then just as abruptly stopping again.

The event log gives the following.
Error: Could not open source file /home/steve/.pan2/article-cache/1258916421,47036.4@astraweb.com.msg No such File or Directory.

Sorry but i'm too much of a novice to know what i've done wrong here.

I'd be really happen to listen to some of your ideas, anyone?

Solved. PAN working on Pardus
 

Went back to this again,
uninstalled Pan and tried recompiling - same problems.
Uninstalled 134 and installed an older version 14.2 plus dependencies - wouldn't compile, lots of errors.

Googled all sorts of stuff, German and Dutch sites and finally back to the Pardus wiki.

I found a reference to a source file whilst searching there,
Followed the link and came across a page marked as Pardus Repositories, http://packages.pardus.org.tr/
All sorts of stuff there, corporate -sandbox - 2009 repo's and 2011 repo's
I searched the 2011 repository, nothing there (shouldn't be either, package manager doesn't show pan using this repo)

There's also a "Devel" repository. http://packages.pardus.org.tr/info/2011/devel/
with a link to "Source Packages" and "Binary Packages"

added the Devel repository to package manager - fired it up and...

yes it works.

Then you feel a real prat because it was there all of the time.
