Packs to take off
man i need a suggestion of stuff to take off to make slackware fast the box is used as a webserver and thats about it LOL

If it is used as a public web server, then you want to take as much off as possible. You may want to look for web sites or books on Linux security. They go through what is needed. Everything else goes. This doesn't only make the server faster, but also more secure. The fewer services that are running, the less exploits are possible. You might also consider recompiling the kernel. Removing unneeded drivers and features can free up memory. The kernel uses only physical ram. Each process in the kernel used a fixed size stack.

can you tell me how to do some of this and im also going to serch for running server oin slackware but i dont know how to compile and im scared that i might remove the wrong thang thanks

Well ... if it's a web-server you can remove anything from the
x and xap series .... delete gnome, kde and kdei. you probably won't need emacs, tcl and tex on it, either ... But the only benefit you'll gain is disk-space, not speed. These things aren't being run on boot, they're just there, don't eat CPU or RAM... Cheers, Tink |
