packman-installation on opensuse version 13.1 - How to do it the best way?

hello

i want to install packman on openSUSE 13.1

how to do that?

note - i want to do it via repository

btw: how to test via terminal:

a.- if / weather it was successful!?
b. if i need packman - or if it is installed allready?

question: can i do it with the following code that i found here:

see some ressources:

http://opensuse-community.org/Repositories/Packman

here on that page i saw that i can add the repo with something like the following code - via Terminal:

i take a code that belongs to an older version - (version 11.3)

derived from that:

zypper addrepo --repo http://packman.inode.at/suse/11.3/packman.repo

to that

zypper addrepo --repo http://packman.inode.at/suse/13.1/packman.repo

note - see i have changed the 11.3 to the version 13.1

can i do this addition via terminal - with the code

look forward to hear from you

why not read the novell opensuse wiki page
for the current OS
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories

and to add the now split up DIFFERENT repos
( please read the change logs )
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_pa...tories#Packman

If you mean, is it installed by default, the answer is no. If you mean, have you already succeeded in adding it, then you can't tell from the evidence in this thread. What you want to do is list repos. Of course, you have already done that in one of your other threads, and, if you read those threads, the answer is there.

Now, to the question of whether you need packman, then you only need it, if you need some software that is unavailable without having it. So, what is the software that is otherwise unavailable that packman will make available? (That's not necessarily a rhetorical question; if you can answer it yourself, and are happy with that, then fine; otherwise, if you want anyone else to help you go further, then you need to tell the others what the answer is).

Packman is one of the bigger repos, and can be a bit slow when it comes to grabbing the data to update the repodata, so you might not want to add packman if you are on a slow 'net link, or you have a slow computer. (Or, you don't want any of the software that is only available from that repo.)

That part makes no sense to me- Packman is a repository. If you add it, you have added the repository. There is no non-repository way of adding a repository, because it is a repository.

Why must it be via the terminal?
yast is more straightforward, if you don't know how to use zypper (not that learning zypper is bad, but the GUI version(s) are easier to get up to speed with). Actually, if you really wanted to, you could use Yast from the command line, but it might not suit you.

Anything about zypper can be found out with 'man zypper' . And, you have already done it.

And note that the community documentation that you have quoted hasn't been updated for the latest oS release, whereas the links that John VV gave, have been.

http://packman.jacobs-university.de/suse/

i took the following link;

http://packman.jacobs-university.de/suse/13.1/

and this did the trick..

btw - now have a closer look at the fresh installed opensuse 13.1

hmm - what do you say bout the levels - all of them are 99 - is this a good choice!?

As with everything SuSE related ( except for the headless SELS) it is WAY easier to do normal everyday things using the gui
suse uses a ton( and i do mean A LOT ) of scripts in the background ,to set up and configure the system
SO MANY that for a lot of things using the GUI IS the best way ( the scripts WILL get ran automatically )

open yast
and use the "software management" gui
or
the "software repositories " GUI ( you can also get to this one from the "install and remove software" gui )

use the "software repositories " GUI for adding software repositories and for setting the priority
this is basically THE SAME as the RedHat "yum-priority-plugin"
for help with that
click on the "Help" menu option

well just adding the software repository will not do anything
you have to USE the versions of the programs that are there
replacing the ones in the base and oss and non-oss repos

PLEASE READ the opensuse wiki and the section on "restricted formats" ( manly under USA bleeped up patent and copyright law )
http://en.opensuse.org/Restricted_formats

flash, java, music formats, video formats are almost all forbidden in the us of a and other countries ( unless one pays for a royalty to use them)

although suse is a rpm based distro
if you have a RHEL background , you will need to UNLEARN a lot of things

suse dose things differently than RHEL
