package manager/network problem? Fadora 11

Ok I'm not sure where this should go, and seeing as I'm a newbbie I hope you'll cut me some slack.
1st question I guess is do I have to have a high speed connection to use them? Be cause some updates so up in the window,but when I pick the one's I want, I get this message saying I have no internet connection.
I only have a dial up modem due to where i live.

No, you don't have to have high speed internet, but let's see if we can diagnose the problem a little more. Did you post this question using your linux machine? Or from another machine? In other words, do you seem to be able to connect to the internet through other programs, web browser, chat client, etc. ?

Hi,

Fedora shouldn't be reporting no internet connection unless there is a connection issue, are you actually able to reach the internet? Are you able to browse the internet in a web browser for example (like konquerer or firefox)? Are you able to ping out, say does "ping www.google.com" in terminal show a connection in milliseconds or does it display an error message?

As far as a first post goes, you included information and a meaningful title... spelling and grammar (and yes I am aware mine isn't always perfect either :)) could probably use a bit of work but beats a heck of alot of first posts I have seen around these forums.

yes I can surf web

Ok yes I can use the web and I was on fadora when I posted this. I even shut down the firewall.And I can Ping google.It did retrive all the updates,It just wouldn't let me download any of them.
:o As far as spelling and grammer goes I'm 52yrs old and quite school in the 9th grade....lol.However this old dog is still trying to lrearn some new tricks.;)

If your running the default Fedora 11 desktop (Gnome), get into System --> Preferences --> Network Connections and see if there's a network connection for your phone. I was having a time tethering my cell phone to the computer until I went to Network Connections and set up the mobile broadband info. I don't have a dialup connection to see if that choice shows up. But usually if you connection doesn't show up in Network Connections, Fedora won't see your box as being connected to a network.
If I'm mistaken, someone correct me please, I'm an old Debian Sid guy who has just switched to Fedora a couple of months ago.

Well I thank you all for the info. As of 1 hr ago I've fixed my problem I switched to openSUSE 10. Haven't had any trouble with it so far...however I've been known to mess with stuff just to see what it does.
That wasn't the only trouble I was having with Fadora, After I installed it my Ubuntu or my windows wouldn't even boot, and the strange thing is Windows is on A different HDD.
I may just be trying to run too many different OS's .I have A 80gb HDD for Windows XP and A 1000GB HDD, I've been trying different linux systems on.
I need to read some Tutorials on how to set up more than 1 linux OS.I just hate haveing this huge HDD with nothing on it...lol.
