What is the major difference between rpm and up2date?

well firstly up2date is VERY obsolete. you don't use it anymore, it's superseded by yum.

rpm is a package file type, and a command to directly install rpm packages. up2date was a tool that wrapped the rpm database / toolset to manage the installation of multiple packages based on various additional data, like security announcements from RedHat etc.

Thank you so much . Sorry for being late for this response.Since I am so much novice on Linux .After gradual usage of yum & rpm , I got to knew their differences.

Note that in RHEL4 up2date is the way to go.
