P III, 60g HDDs, MS 6309m/b plan to install Ubuntu 8.04.1, err message ata2

I have an older box I plan to run as an office/home Linux box.
Running Live CD I get an error related to ata2 having problems.
I am not sure what was on the three HDDs in the box.
Would it help if I formatted the 3 drives first?
If so how?
This is my first attempt at doing anything with Linux, so I am really new and very apprehensive.

Thanks in anticipation

What was the exact error messege ? It's hard to help without knowing. That drive could be dying too. If you don't have any data on those drives you don't mind losing, you aren't taking a risk just installing Ubuntu. The installer will format those drives for you, if you tell it to. You'll be prompted.

Let us know how it goes.....good luck...
