Overnet problems

I am having overnet problems.. I could not get on the network because of a my routers built in firewall. I am using "overnetclc-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm" for the core and "ed2k-gtk-gui v0.6.3" for the gui on Fedora Core 3. After going thought some work arounds on my firewall, one of them suggested to try port 80 to listen on, so when I tried to do that it said only root can do that. so I switched to root and changed the port to 80 and sure enough it worked. Now heres where my problem comes into play. Now when I switch back to my regular account i can't get past the first pop up window that says start a new core or connect to one runnig on another computer. If I click start a new one and hit okay it does nothing.( also note before it worked except I was firewalled?) did the files change ownership? how do I fix this? any thoughts? your help would be very much appreciated!
