Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

The best one or 'better' one for you is what suits your needs the best. Most users here will advise you to try some of the distros out using a LiveCD/LiveDVD to see if all your hardware gets detected and if a certain distro has what it takes to draw your attention. So, go over to DistroWatch, download some of the distros you want to try and take them for a spin. The one you end up using is the one that best fits your needs.

Kind regards,

Eric

From my perspective both are more or less the same. They all have RedHat roots, even though Mandriva went much further from those roots.
If you wish, you can read my reviews of both distros:

You could even try running distributions on a Virtual Machine Software, like VirtualBox. It'll let you test drive the distro, without having to do an actual installation.

Note: You would need some extra RAM to use Virtual Machine Software, if you feel you are short of RAM in your current setup then a LiveCD would be the best bet to try out the OS.

Each distro has its fans (and fanatics), but, for the major distros, it's not so much a question of "best" as it is a matter of taste.

I would suggest picking any one of the major distros and using it for a while. Then you will have a your own benchmark for comparison.

My favorites are Debian and Slackware.

Thanx for your suggestions, I will download some LiveCD's/LiveDVD's and take it from there
