Smile Oracle VM Virtual box spreadsheet application hangs

Hei,

I am trying to install the LibraryOffice Excel. I manage to install, but the application hangs*1 and not open.

I am doing a online course, the applications and installation of 'VM Virtual box' was done for me (I really don't know how to start, everything is pre-set), but I manage to install LibraryOffice using sudo command.

On the readme file from Library Office package has a following message (LibreOffice_7.2.2.2_Linux_x86-64_rpm --> package used):

"
Difficulties starting LibreOffice (e.g. applications hang) as well as problems with the screen display are often caused by the graphics card driver. If these problems occur, please update your graphics card driver or try using the graphics driver delivered with your operating system. Difficulties displaying 3D objects can often be solved by deactivating the option "Use OpenGL" under 'Tools - Options - LibreOffice - View - 3D view'.
"

but I could not find "'Tools - Options - LibreOffice - View - 3D view'."

I tried some commands that I saw in the intent as "$ sudo get-apt XXXX" but the computer don't recognized 'get-apt'.

I tried "$ sudo yum update all", but I get this message:

"

There is no such software.

Excel is the spreadsheet application in Microsoft Office.

The office suite you're trying to install is "LibreOffice" (not "LibraryOffice"), and its spreadsheet application is "Calc".

What is the online course for?

If LibreOffice is required why was it not provided?

Have you tried asking the course tutors?

I tried "$ sudo yum update all", but I get this message:
It is very unlikely it says "get-apt" - it probably says "apt-get" - which is a tool for Debian/.deb-based distros.

On the other hand, "yum" is a tool for RHEL/.rpm-based distros.

This suggests you're using CentOS 6, which is no longer supported.

If this OS was provided by the course, you need to talk to the course organizers about this.

Also, it is not surprising that trying to install LibreOffice 7.2 (released October 2021) would be failing on CentOS 6.4 (which is six versions behind the 6.10 that stopped being supported last year).

If your course requires a spreadsheet application then why is it not already installed like everything else?

(Have you actually checked whether LibreOffice Calc or another application is already installed?)

Again, the people providing this course should be supporting you in the issues you encounter.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

The requirements for LibreOffice 7.2.2 is glibc 2.17 and kernel 3.10 or higher

Your CentOS 6 VM is kernel is 2.6.32 with glibc version 2.12.

CentOS 6 went end of life in 2020 with the last version of 6.10 and from what I can tell so has quickstart Cloudea VM. Your version is 6.4 which is why you can not connect using ssl to vault.centos.org site. Even though 7.2.2 was install it will not run in your virtual machine. The version that was installed with CentOS 6 was 4.x.

I don't know if gnumeric is installed or if it will successfully open your Excel file. Your better off going to a current linux distribution but I don't know how your running this VM so I can not suggest alternatives at the moment.

Hei, boughtonp

Thanks for your answer.

I did try to contact them (the course tutors and support), no answers...
About the "LibreOffice" (not "LibraryOffice"), I did a mistype here (sorry). It is actually "LibreOffice". I managed to install but it hangs...
I tried to use "oocalc" in the terminal, (like the assignment suggested but is not working.
"
$ oocalc
bash: oocalc: command not found
"
ps. calc, Calc also not found.

And I check if there is any other spreadsheet application. but I could not find it.

Do you have any suggestions? I just want a spreadsheet application :-(

Thanks
Itamara

Hei michaelk,

I don't know what to do...
Appreciate your feedback.
The course that I am doing is "Big Data Modeling and Management Systems"....
Now I don't know if I continue just to learn the theory behind or if I should skip and find a new one...
Anyhow many many many thanks.
:-)

Well "oocalc" is almost certainly OpenOffice Calc. (OpenOffice is software which LibreOffice forked from, and is now a different office suite managed by Apache.)

I don't know if old versions of LibreOffice still used that name or not - it may be someone has taken an old course for OpenOffice and only partially updated it.

On my system, LibreOffice Calc can be started via the terminal with "libreoffice --calc", but as a GUI application it doesn't actually run in the terminal, so I'm not sure the benefit of that versus pressing the Meta key and using the main application menu of whatever desktop environment you're using.

If the course just needs a spreadsheet / office suite you could try a different OS - for example, Linux Mint comes with LibreOffice pre-installed.

You can install libreoffice in Windows. Does the course require other programs running in linux?

If your Windows 10 PC has sufficient "computing power" and memory you can run an up to date distribution like Mint as suggested under VirtualBox.

The current version certainly doesn't, it's 'localc'.

And yes, the root of the problem seems to be some sort of outdated and not very good online course.
