Hi to everyone

Now i am going to install "ORACLE 10g on OEL 5

In this URL

http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/oracle-db-10gr2-installation-on-rhel-5.php

Quote:

Edit the "/etc/redhat-release" file replacing the current release information (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga)) with the following:
redhat-4
** I know OEL is based on REDHAT Distribution **

1. Why should i issue this command under "/etc/redhat-release"

redhat-4

2. Is it necessary to install 10g on oel5

Thanks and Regards

Oracle 5 is a NOT free operating system
like RHEL 5 it is based on
also it is a bit on the OLD side .UNLESS you NEED it for OLD software or to run on older hardware it is recommended you install the current 6.2

also Oracle's rebuild of Red Hat enterprise 5 is explicitly tuned and configured and optimized for THEIR database ( also not free)
the oracle OS is meant to run the Oracle database on a server .Not on a "home" general purpose computer

also the 10 database is an older version. Is there a MUST USE need for 10 and not the current 11

also they both are NOT free
so you did buy the required support contract ? right ?

have you asked your paid for support
Oracle like Red hat requires a support contract , that gets you updates and access to the tech support

as to installing
I am a bit confused on the three above posts

is this a dual boot with Windows 7
AND
a vmware install ON oracle linux

or

is this a vmware install running ON windows 7

@ hi john

Quote:
I think you are much confused. Already i mentioned I am a Oracle DBA Trainee. Really i was using OEL 4.4 . Going forward training will be focused
RAC ( Real Application Cluster) .So they recommended to use Advanced Linux versions (Above 5 or 5.7 like that ). I am asking questions to improve myself
for self studies at home. Yesterday i installed OEL 5 but facing problems " Please review above posts"
In office environment we have oracle 10g database so 10g on OEL 5 so i think it's enough rightnow

is this a vmware install running ON windows 7 " Yes "

I am not using windows only for browsing purpose and preparing slide shows.

Hope you can understand Everything

seeing as a support contract is a requirement with Oracles rebuild of RHEL and for the Oracle database
and that support contract gets you tech support
http://www.oracle.com/us/support/index.html

??? what ??

so this IS a physical install to the harddrive THEN installing vmware in to "oracle unbreakable linux5.? "

to rephrase
this IS NOT a virtual install on vmware IN windows 7

@ hi john

I could n't understand clearly. what do you expect from me. I saying about my system configuration to improve my skill sets.
" Oracle tech support " why should i go there ????
Clearly i am saying "Windows 7 is host and linux 5 is guest.
Please clarify my doubts ! Still i am waiting ! ....

If you have any confusions what i posted ( Regarding windows ) please leave it ... But expecting answer for linux.

Thanks and Regards
