optimum HDD temperature

Hi,

Does any one have any idea regarding what should be the optimum temperature of HDDS at a room temperature.I installed a package which shows me the temp of my 3 hdds ,i wanna know if its fine.

[tesla@wsx02 ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sd{a..c}
/dev/sda: ST320413A: 43°C
/dev/sdb: ST380011A: 47°C
/dev/sdc: ST3500418AS: 41°C
[tesla@wsx02 ~]$

Check product manuals from Seagate. For example, I checked the ambient temperature in operational mode (for a working device) of model ST320413A is 0 - 60 °C, so I'd say your device it's safe. Looking at the temperature of my current hard disk I see 39 °C, but it is destined to increase later when the ambient temperature increases and the amount of work become huge as well.

Cool..never got an idea to check the hdd manual. There is one more thing i wanted to know off,i dont quite understand what the ouput of sensors shows me.

What exactly is sys ,cpu and aux temp? is Aux temp the PSU temp and CPU may be processor?

SYS may refer to the Motherboard, CPU to the processor and AUX sometimes is a bogus value (as in your case, since I don't think a temperature of -48 °C is performed somewhere in you're room). Since there is not a standard for sensors layout, it can be anything or even an unplugged wire of the sensors chip (as most likely is in your case).
