Question Optimizing Performance By Kernel Recompilation

I've installed FC 5 on a 2.4GHz P4 with 768MB RAM. Would a kernel recompilation help in the process of optimizing the performance of the system to my hardware?

I just did a 'yum update kernel' and it completed successfully. I mean will a kernel recompilation help? Further is there any other way to optimize the performance of the system?

Technically? ... yes. Significantly or perceptively? ... probably no.

i recompiled my kernel on pclinuxos and (it works fine ,) the difference basically that i have felt is in boot times custom kernel boots around 10 seconds faster and halts 5 seconds faster
the bootup time is decreased basically coz it doesnot show any AUDIT (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.xxxxx.xxxxxx) initialized (some numbers which it shows when it boots default kernel ) ---- dunno if its bad that in my custom (re-compiled kernel) doesnot initialize any audit thingy ..... but works perfect
and halt is faster basically because i have removed support for LVM (coz i dont have any , default one tries to unmount them only to know that no LVM groups defined then halts , ) default one just doesnot even think abt LVM...... so hopefull you may indeed feel speed difference
