Optimal Partition Setup - RedHat 9
 

hey guys,

I have been playing with ReHat for a while now and would like to reinstall it again but with an optimal partition setup.

I have a second drive at 40GB which is the one that will be used with refernce to this post. First install set the 3 paritions as 105 MB as boot, 37GB as home, and 501MB as swap. I have seen server setups where they split the partitions into something like 6 or 7 paritions.

The question is: how many parititions would you setup for optimal running, maintenace, and not forgetting security etc?

I am currently reading Real World Linux by Bob Toxin too for some security background info as well.

Anyway what do you think guys? How would you set up your linux paritions and how many paritions considering the size of the drive etc?

Well, this is what I usually do:

/ = 500mb
/usr = 2000mb
/var = 500mb
/tmp = 200mb
/home = the rest of the drive

Depending on what you are doing with the box, you might want to shrink or enlarge these.

I would say yes. IDE hard drives are cheap so if you run out of room you could always add another.

Also I should have stated that this setup is what I use for my home servers (if you call them that, lol). If this is a workstation I would make the /usr size to 3gigs to 4 gigs. If this is a production box I would leave a little room incaese you run our of space and need to quickly add some.
