/opt or /usr ?

Hello,

I'm in the process of replacing my tiny HDD by a much bigger one and installing at least 3 different Linux distros (Libranet, Damnsmall Linux and Kaella-knoppix (a recent French version of knoppix).

For the moment I'm on dual boot (win98 and Libranet) on the small HDD.

My question is:
Is it better to install new programs (from binary tar.gz files especially) in /usr/ or in /opt/?

I see my /opt/ rep is quite empty -- my idea being creating a partition for /usr/ so I don't have to reinstall my programs if I have to reinstall Libranet.

Thanks!

In either case, I'd suggest also creating an /etc partition too, for the config's for the apps you've got installed to /usr

As for an answer, I'd say stick with /usr if that's what you are used to. You can use /opt in the future if you decide to roll your own programs with special features that you don't need everyday, and then you can launch them with full PATH.

Cool
