Opions please
Howdy all:
Looking for suggestions on a good starting point. I haven't used Unix since about 88, never used Linux. Main experience is with Dos 3.21-6.22, all Win versions, Novell 3.11-4.01, and a bit of OS2. Anyway gonna try my hand at Linux. Where is a good beginner point? Redhat seems to be prominent, is this a good choice? Anyway thanks for listing, and btw if anyone remembers HP's RTE/6vm, lets chat and drink a cup of coffee :) Thanks Troy |
linux mandrake is a good start also - check out linuxiso.org to download and burn a few different distros

Redhat is pretty easy to use, and I hear Mandrake is too, as macewan already pointed out.

Hey all,
thanks for such quick support, its nice to see communications. another question is about hardware compatabilty. Fixing to invest in a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse? any known issues with these? im scanning the forums and reading as much as possible. currently dling RH 8.0, pc is pretty standard, amd duron 1gig, 512 ram, 40 and 10 gig drives, Nvidia gforce mx400, home networking via DSL. Currently dual booting xp/98 cleared the 10 gig to be linux only drive. Troy |
oh yeah:
please keep opions coming Troy |
You shouldn't have any problems with RH8.0. It's real easy to install, and very easy to get around in. If you have any concerns, go to this link. You can click on the hardware requirements on that page. Good luck, and post any other questions you have.

Mandrakesoft is having financel concerns so, that might not be a good choice if you want support, SuSE is a good beginer distro. I went from a windows only man, to a dual boot with windows & suse.
