Hello mandrake876, welcome to LQ,
could you please open a terminal and execute the command Code:
lsusb Markus |
besides the above "lsusb"
you are aware that ALL of the opensuse 11 versions are NOT supported any longer OpenSUSE 11.4 hit End Of Life earlier this month and 11.3 ,10 months BEFORE that on "January 20th 2012" please do not use unsupported versions of a Operating system it is VERY unsafe currently only OpenSUSE 12.1 and 12.2 are supported |

Code:
uname -r Markus |
...Issue is not currently resolved with (above) int'net modem...Have come to conclusion I'm not really satisfied with OpenSuse (don't really like
GUI anyway...It (OS) tends to be slow, requires almost 2 GB on install. Also wants to take over Windows (XP) (Bootup). Have been trying other Linux distros, but haven't settled on one. (I have a 10+year-old computer running WinXP) (!)...Anyone have any suggestions? Slackware? Other dis- tros? Appreciate your feedback! |

it NEEDS a lot of resources to run well 2 gig ram MIN. 8 to 12 gig of ram is better depending on the hardware , a lot of 10 year old hardware is not supported ant longer . It is 10 years old after all I have a old computer from 2001 that really can only run CentOS 6 and even then the antique usb2 add on card only partly works ( usb 1 is the default for the computer) and i have to manually mount the 3.5 in floppy and the antique Nvidia gforce2 card ONLY is supported by the opensource driver ( nvidia no longer supports it ) if you post the hardware specs then we can make a suggestion |
Computer: ACPI Uniprocessor PC- Intel Pentium4 CPU- 1.80 GHZ 1.79 GHZ, 256 MB RAM....USB Wireless Broadband: Cricket EVDO Network Adapter...
Display adapter: NVIDIA GeForce2 Pro-(Microsoft Corp. (Need good distro that's not a hassle to use, and be able to get internet device to work) Thanks! |
256 MB RAM
that is going to be a very big problem and like me the gforce2 card WILL BE A PROBLEM you will NOT be able to use the nvidia .run driver unless you install the much OLDER and still in support CentOS 5.8 ( 5.9 will be the LAST , then security updates only) with only 256 ram ??? centOS 5.8 using the xfce desktop BUT CentOS 5 is NOT targeted at the "new linux user" It is a free rebuild of Red Hat's RHEL 5 , a SERVER class distro you might also look into Puppy linux |

I would also recommend to put more RAM into the computer. Markus |
