opensuse 11.2 installation help
hi ...I am a new user of linux...My machine config is stated below..
1. Pentium 4 with 1.8 gh 2. 512 ram 3. 15 gb hard disk I want to know how to install opensuse 11.2 and specially about partition ..how much space should be allotted for swap/home/root etc kindly help me in this regards |
Well swap partition will have to allocated space double of your RAM
If your RAM is 2GB, the swap space will be 4GB As far as home partition is concerned, that's up to you, coz. u are the one who knows how much data you'll be storing in the home directory ! |
With only 15GB to use, your resources are very thin. I would try to install "/" in the first 8, use 2GB of swap (all you really need) and save the rest for /home.
Either way your going to have to put your OS on a diet and trim the unnecessary and duplicated applications (ie; only one mail client, browser, media player, etc.). |
If his system with 512MB starts using anywhere near 2GB of swap
the machine will be rendered useless. He would be better off to have 512 to 768MB swap, and choose the programs and desktop he wants to use wisely. Cheers, Tink |

Let it do it for you...
If you download and use the openSUSE 11.2 DVD to install, the installer will make a proposal based, if that is what is seen as available, on an unallocated space of 15GB. You don't have to accept the proposal and can interrupt the installation at any time before a final warning, but the installer will give you a stating point, and an answer to your question. |
If this is on a home or test system don't get too concerned about partition sizes. They don't matter really for your use.
I agree to let the system do what it want's and try it that way. 512M I think is about or not even the minimum I'd use. Wonder if setting up a swap on an installed flash drive would speed it up? Kind of assumes some things too. I have never had a flash drive quit on me but everyone says they have a limit. Also write speeds may be slow on some system compared to drives. |
