openSUSE 10.2 black scren

Hi there guys.I've just downloaded openSUSE 10.2 x86...i record it on DVD.I boot from cd...the menu load...the menu with the types of installation...the problems is that...there works only 2 options...memtest and boot from hard disk...if i click installation, installation acpi=off, or the third type of installation...my computer loads up the kernel and then it start to show black screen...the monitor didn'y shutdown...only shows black screen...in the past i had errors(that i didn't fix at all)...on the start screen it says that i have problems with acpi and when the system boots it blocks after 2-3 mins(that's on fedora core 6) so i was thinking in that direction: "Is the problem the same? :o I've got to start installation with acpi=off or what...let's try anyway" and i've tried...but the result was the same :(( could you tell me what to do...here is the computer configuration if it makes you any sence about the problem :(

CPU: Intel Celeron DD 331(or 336 i don't remeber) 64-bit i686 architecture
MB: Biostar PT880 Pro-A7
VGA: ATI Radeon 9600 XT (RV630) 128/64
RAM: 2x512mb

So tell me...am i cursed or it's just the computer problem.. :) i have problems with any distro...the main thing are the 3D drivers...the other things...i fix them :) but that's not the question now...have you got any idea how to install openSUSE 10.2 :o

I strongly suspect the problem is that the installer cannot properly detect settings for your ATI Radeon 9600XT video card. Your best bet is to search the web and see what other people have done.

In general, when the installer does not recognize a card during an install, the action to fix the problem would take one of two forms with openSUSE, depending on where and how things failed.

If the install stops and says it cannot find a driver, search around for a button or link that will allow you to choose a generic driver, a vesa driver, or something related to choosing video options. You may have to start over and choose a different option on a screen that preceded the one where you encountered the problem. If you have a different video monitor handy, you could try changing that as well. Finally, if the installer did not find the driver, but you have the option of continuing the install (probably not your situation based on your post), you can also choose that option and continue the install, trying the idea below after the "driverless" install completes.

If the install proceeded more or less normally, but then ended up booting Linux in the command line mode (text with a blinking prompt), I suggest entering the command:
sax2
This will start the video configuration and you should get a suggested driver. It will not be optimal, but installing the proper ATI driver for your card can be handled later.

Use Google and various combinations of "ATI 9600XT" "Linux" "Install" and "SUSE 10.2". You are looking for other people with similar experience and their solution. The card is reasonably common, so there should be helpful information out there.

Note: ATI cards do not work well with Linux. It is what you have and it will work (I have done it many times) so don't be discouraged. Still, you usually have to jump through some extra hoops to make ATI cards behave with Linux since their Linux drivers are not yet well developed. (They have gotten better in the last year or so, but still leave something to be desired.)

It just occurred to me that the Hardware Compatibility List here can also have helpful tips:
