OpenSuse 10.2 and Ubuntu 7.04 full specification
Hi guys
I am a novice linux user. I am hoping to get a linux distro installed onto my PC. I was wondering if you guys know of any good website that can offer me a detailed specification sheet about (OpenSuse 10.2 AND Ubuntu 7.04) and what software it has. I need specification information on the programs installed, not a typical review from power-users where EVERYTHING is wonderful. I am not a power-user. I specifically want to know what softwares(applications...) are included by default. Default as: after a "typical" installation. I need to know whether it supports flashplayer,java... Does it have eclipse IDE? Does it support Java Development Kit? I have tried to seek information from Opensuse.org and Ubuntu.com and it got very technical. The UBUNTU and OPENSUSE team wanted me to develop their GTK blah blah blah... I've heard of Amarok, a media player included in Suse 10.2 ... but it is said to NOT support AVI and MP3 and wma... Where exactly can I get the codecs that are specifically designed for suse 10.2 linux? My PC Spec: Fujitsu Scaleo Ji 1602 Intel P4 3.06HT 512MB RAM ddr2 667, 80GB Hard drive ide DVD writer Thank you for your time. |
Visit distrowatch.com and click on the openSuse entry in their top 100, it should offer full details about the software available from the dvd.
And yes, Suse has Eclipse, flash can be installed as an option during install, jdk is available from their repositories. Third party packages: http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_package_repository How-to: http://suseforums.net/lofiversion/index.php/t18288.html |
The top distros will all have the major SW packages---if not on the CD/DVD, then in the repositories.
Note: I recommend just installing from CD--not DVD, and then adding things with the package manager. Easier to get your system customized without getting too big. |
Hi,
And there is a sticky thread by redazz at the top of the suse distro forum here at LQ which details how to add the .mp3 .avi etc xine codecs. regards.... andrew. |
