Opening ports: setting up a web server for the public

I have an nginx server set up, which works locally, however when I try to open it through my IP online, it won't work. A port checker site says that port 80 is closed too.

How can I open the required ports for it to work? I'm using Mint 13.

Does your machine have a public IP or does it have a private IP behind a router? If you can access the web page through its private IP within the LAN, then the problem is most likely with the networking equipment you have installed between the modem and the machine.

Solved - for some reason my router configuration didn't work a couple minutes after it was configured. I've tried it again after eating dinner and it worked - changed nothing in between. Since when do routers need more than a couple minutes to change their settings? :/

Odd. Maybe some cache deal?

Thanks for the update.
