OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display: :0.0

I am rather new to OpenGL and I wrote/compiled a simple program using GLUT. When I tried to run it, the following error appeared:
GLUT: Fatal Error in double: OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display: :0.0

I checked the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and also added the line
Load "glx" in the modules section but the problem still persisted. Could somebody please tell me how to rectify the problem - how do I check whether the GLX extension is actually supported or not. I tried "xdpyinfo" and it doesnt show the GLX extension. What is the solution to this problem?

Thanks.

i don't know much about the process you did, but did you restart x after altering your xf86config-4 file?

are you running the right driver for you GFX card, say if it's Nvidia, are you using their driver, rather than the distro supplied one?
