"open with" HOW!!!
 

i basicly just installed suse 10 and when ever i click ANYTHING it asks open with :S i nothing really about linux but my college said suse 10 was ment to be good as its very new. so i downloaded it installed it and as ive been windows up to now ive kinda expected to click my computer and a window opens with c drive etc in there. so please tell me how to config it or say whats wrong whatever

I use Mandriva, but you say you click on anything and you get "open with", right?

That's not normal. All your menu items and devices should open right up and the only reason any files should say that is if you created them on another PC, downloaded them to this PC, and don't have the matching or equivalent software.
Sorry I can't be of more help unless you can say what is going on during boot, or which software won't open.

What do you mean by "ANYTHING"?
I don't think that it asks you what to open with when you click on, say, Home icon on your desktop, or most of the multimedia files like jpg, gif, png, mp3, mpg, etc., rite?

are you trying to run programs?, its no like windows where u dubble click an exe and it opens up, you usally have to open it in the terminal or the run program

when i had mandrake 10.1 installed there was a home i could go into and i downloaded wine and that installed and i got steam running which was pritty good i thought. but with suse 10 it has a my computer icon and a network places icon but when u click it u get the open with window and also there is no home on suse 10 on the desktop. firefox works and office does but not wine or my computer

Well I seem to recall when I had SuSE 9.3 Pro a couple of months ago, that that "lack" of a /home directory confused me a little when I moved from Mandriva 2005LE.

Is it listed in the menu ??? If not, just make a new directory called /home on the desktop - thats what I seem to recall doing. If it's in the user account it should then just be /home/creacher.

Or it might be that it's "hidden". Because when you log into the user account you'd normally be in the /home anyway.

It seemed to me that SuSE had just done things in a slightly "windows" sort of way. The /home directory might be in the "my computer". Wherever it is, it can always been moved to the desktop/taskbar.

p.s. As for the "open with" thing, if that is what it offered for a file, then normally you get a dialogue box that looks a little like the menu and you can run down it too pick the appropriate app to open "it" with.

well im mainly looking towards the open with thing cause the home thing yes thanks for that and i will do that but i really want to be able to open things like wine and mainly i want a my computer the works like a windows one is that possible? basicly i like the setup of windows but the stibilty of linux is much better and its free :P also the PC will be for office an server running so i need wine to run a counter-strike server but i need to transfer files between computer so i need to network folder to wook too

Sorry, this is Linux and it will never work exactly like windows. Remember that Windows isnt "easy", you already learned it and someone new to computers wont have much difference between learning windows or linux.

Then SuSe is the right thing for you. After some learning you'll feel quite well and you'll like it. I even managed to get my father (50 years old), who likes windows very much, to using SuSe.

For office there's OpenOffice, I think it's already installed.

For wine see winehq.org or search here in the forum.

i know office is installed and when i had mandrake it had server programs on it so im fine with that but the only bit of windows i want it to be like is a my computer folder on the desktop a network places on the desktop a my documents folder on the desktop and a control panel and ill be 100% fine but as i dont have a working my computer folder or network places im finding it hard and i dont have a clue if there is a control panel with add + remove inside.

but everyone is drifting away from what im asking how do i get my computer folder to work etc not come up with "open with" each time ! i cant do anything other then documents atm. plz help me with the open with program not say linux isnt windows over and over.

im gona have to go back to windows XP soon if i cant solve this soon (which id hate to do)

Ok, now you are saying that when you click(or double-click) the "My Computer" link on the desktop, the system asks you what you want to open it with. Is this rite?

In my experience, this is very weird and this shouldn't happen at all. The "Open With..." dialog is meant for file and not meant for a folder, or a shortcut to a folder. So there may be something wrong with the property of the "My Computer" shortcut.

Now, right-click on the "My Computer" icon, and select "properties". Is there a tab called "URL"? If there is, select it. Does the URL points to "System:/". If it is, then the problem is elsewhere. If it is not, then you should change it to "System:/", or better yet create a new shortcut to "System:/" by right-clicking on the desktop.

And it is the same for the "My Documents", "Control Center", etc. Just create the appropriate links to the relevant folder(/home/username) or application(kcontrol(?)).

As for the Network thing, I can't help much since I don't use that feature.

p/s since you din say what desktop you use, and since it is SUSE I think I can safely assume that it is KDE :)

p/s Please don't try to threaten that you will switch back to windows or anything like that. Since no one actually cares. All the people here just like linux and they don't get anything by answering your questions. Ya, I agree that they have biased away from your question, but you didn't really make your question clear in the first place. If you have used GNU/Linux before using M$ than you would have not said that you want your desktop to be similar to M$ one. Ubuntu provides you with the feature. Not sure about Suse.

Yast is a good program for that.

If you are opening the file for the first time then you would have to look for the command which opens the file. Next time you can open it by just clicking.

Stay with GNU/Linux and feel the power of it. :-)

erm today i was getting some boot error cause i was overclocking it and screwed the harddrive up (FSB wasnt on its own) so i defaulted my settings and reinstalled suse 10 and do u know what everything works my computer network places everything is working !!! thanks guys for all your help !!! and linux runs so much smoother then crappy windows :P

edit: wine when i click it comes up with the old open with window, i can tell u its a .rpm file so what should that run as ?

p.s. Looking at the URLs, these pages are published by Novell so I think it is referring to commercial products of SUSE. However, since wine itself is a free software, so I think it should be available in the repositories. Check the native package management system in SUSE(which is known to be one of the best) first before downloading a RPM file from the Internet. Great chances that it is already available.

There is a Counter-Strike server available for Linux and it would be much wiser to use that.
