open source help..!

What could be the best suggestion for a open Source project relevant to Linux in terms of Systems Administration or service provision.

I just have to present an article on that project presenting the:
History, How its works?, What it does?, And what is the future scope of the Project..!

Could you guys plz help me out..!
And just want a very basic project, like

Apache
Open Office
Asterisk
MySQL
phpMyAdmin
GNOME
KDE

Also, Where can I find any relevant information on the above projects to document???

Is this a serious question?
Did you try to ask Google or some other search engine using a few keywords (and got nothing out of it)?

All the above are not basic projects and their documentation is very available from a search engine called Google.

I just cant help but have a nudge that this is a homework sorta thing, where u want all the answers spoon fed at you. You wont get very far my dear friend!!

And why and how do you think these are basic projects????? All of the above projects are by any means no small and basic. And all have their own home pages on web.

Quiet frankly i dont think you could get away with that excuse cuz you seriously dont have to be a heavy linux user to learn how to do your own research. My advice is narrow down to what you want to do; for instance, do you want to deal with networking? If so then research about a networking project. Is it web applications? If so then phpmyadmin, apache and friends will be your core applications in developing your project. The projects you stated above are other people's creations to enable us create more projects. They are enablers. So unless you want to improve on their features then i dont think they will qualify as such. Personally am running a project on sms'es using Kannel and open source smsgateway and using mysql as my database. You get the drift??

Hope you get the picture now:cool:
