Only TEXT console (SUSE 9.3)

I'm currently running Runlevel 3 as default, but I'd like SUSE to boot up in a completely text based console, (none of the background gfx). It sometimes gives me a text based console, but I have no idea why, and im thinking it might be a bug, but I have been unable reproduce it.
I'vebeen looking at my services, but im not confident enough to dabble with them, and last but not least, I only know what a few of them actually do.

Any help will be muh appreciated.

It has nothing to do with your services. The next time you boot, highlight the line in the Grub screen that you use to boot SuSE, and append or edit it (it will only affect that particular boot) using either the 'e' key or an input box, if one is available, to include the number 3 at the end. That should place you directly into a text login prompt.

If that works then you can just change it permanently in your menu.lst.
