only root can see other HDDs?
ok.... I finally got linux to see my "windows" drives. FANTASTIC!
well i copied & pasted my "floppy" icon 3 times & named them c d e (respectively) representing the DOS drive letters. (I'm in root btw) i change the properties so that they go to the appropriate drive & that works fine. if i do the same in any other login than root, I cant access them. Another thing.... these "shortcuts" on my desktop (root) disappear the next time I log on! What's up with that?????????? bottom line... i would like shortcuts that dont disappear, & be able to access my HDDs without being in root. thanx |
Which desktop-/window-manager are you using?
As for the "can't access" bit I'd recommend searching this site ... there's been LOTS of threads dealing with this "problem" ... Cheers, Tink |
i had a similar prob with a cdrom...can u hit ur floppy from root?? can u see it in fstab??also try checking the permissions on the hdd

i'm using kde, just that question makes me wanna try gnome.
what is fstab, i thought it would be a dir, but its a file. if i mkdir i get no error, but the dir aint there if i try to access the dir i just made. i tried mkdir ./fstab too. i did a chmod 777 on the "drives" |
fstab is a file located at /etc/fstab - in it you can set drives and partitions to automatically mount at boot time, and you can also specify permissions for normal non-root users to mount and unmount certain drives. Read the man page for fstab for more information.
