Only able to log-in with a Guest Session - User name just returns to login
Not exactly sure what I have done but I can't login except to a Guest Session.
I tried Ubuntu a couple of years ago and didn't really get to grips with it. Last week I finely got my act together and started to look Ubuntu again, so I'm still very green with LINUX! I installed Ubuntu 11.10, setup a user name as "John" and a password. I have logged in every day since installing without any problems. Tonight I turned the PC on and get the logon screen which is giving me three options "Other", "John" and "Guest Session". When I enter my password using my user name and password, the screen turns purple for about 2 seconds and then returns to the Black login screen. If I login the "Guest Session" then the Xfce Desktop environment loads without any problems. I have nothing on the PC that is important, so I could just reload the OS, but really I need to get a understand of what is going on (or not as the case may be) and what I did wrong to get this problem and how to put it right. Any help would be gratefully recieved! |
When it returns to the Black login screen that means your graphical interface (X) has exited for some reason.
If it doesn't happen with Guest session, I will tempted to guess that a config setting in your user X session makes X to quit. There are no message errors when X quits and you return to the Black login screen ? Maybe in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ? |
