One small issue.

Is there a way to turn off the 'launcher' style desktop on ubuntu netbook
remix, that doesn't involve reinstalling?

And this is the google search that lead me to above link.

I've used the desktop switcher in 9.04 but not in later versions; and the first reply in the first link might imply that it might no longer work in your version (which you don't mention, by the way)

No longer using UNR

I guess one could also install a different window manager.

Jefro is correct. You can install any Window manager you wish.
