one or more disks are failing
 

i m new to linux
i am using fedora14 . i am using it with windows
from the past few days fedora os is giving notification that one or two disks are failing, disk have many bad sectors. i am unable to understand this problem.
so please help me

you should save all your important data and replace those disks. If you need more info please give us detailed description of that problem.

Messages about bad sectors on your HD('s) are an indication that the disks are failing. At a certain point, both Windows and Linux will not be able to function correctly due to this problem.

From experience I noticed that it starts rather slow: One or two bad sectors and that's it for "a while". But at a certain point it seems to cascade and within a week or two I had 81 offline uncorrectable (bad) sectors and this does become a problem for day-to-day work.

I would suggest you make a backup of the important data on a regular base until you are able to replace the faulty disks. Don't wait to long.

I'll third what has been said about backups. Until this is fixed, backup any significant newly-created or changed data.

You might look into do a S.M.A.R.T. test.

Then you might look to moving to a more recent version of Fedora or to something that doesn't age out quite as fast. V. 14 reached end of life three years ago.

Before you replace anything, is it complaining about a specific partition? If so, is that an NTFS partition which you share with Windows?

Sir it is only giving notification when i use linux partition
It is functioning properly when i use windows
Is there any way that i could get rid of this problem coz its not possible for me to backup huge amount of data n then replace harddisk

All disks die sooner or later, so you have to start doing backups now; in fact you should already be doing them, regardless of OS

What do you mean by functioning properly?
- Doesn't windows notify you something is wrong with the disk(s)?
- Does a disk check on windows tell you nothing is wrong?

You might want to post the exact message(s) that are shown by Linux.

If this is related to bad/uncorrectable sectors: No there isn't. This points to hardware failure and sooner or later you will loose your data if you do not have back-ups!
