update: well, i tried about a hundred different combos and still got the same result every time - "Already associated to the selected AP" but no connection, just like before.

and then i got knocked out by my meds in my dorm room and broke the laptop. it's totally written off... well, thanks for helping me anyway UnSpawn, you've been great.
