onboard sound died :(

I'm building a linux box for MythTV and had the sound working fine for a couple of weeks. I recently plugged in a digitial audio cable to the spdif connector and now I can't get sound to work at all. I've removed the digital cable and am just trying to use the regular output port. From reading other posts on this board I've done the following to troubleshoot:

- used apt to install the latest version of alsa-drivers and alsa-utils
- used alsaconf to reinstall the drivers for the onboard sound
- used alsamixer to unmute everything
- Have been using aplay to play a wav file to test sound
- Captured lsmod, lspci -v, and /etc/modules.conf (all three at the bottom of this post).

What else can I do? I'm out of ideas.

Thanks!

*bump*

Any ideas on this one? I'm stuck :(

Muzzy 04-12-2004 10:36 AM

Try alsamixer and check that the volume settings are correct.

/usr/bin/alsamixer

Do you get any errors or is the only symptom that you don't get sound?

Mark Byers.

dwalton22 04-12-2004 10:45 AM

I've used alsamixer and gnome-alsamixer to turn up the sound on everything.

I don't see any error messages at bootup. What log files should I check? So far the only sympton is that I don't get any sound.

Muzzy 04-12-2004 12:43 PM

I don't know - if all you did is plug a cable in then maybe you broke the soundcard?!

You could try downloading a live CD like knoppix and seeing if that can autodetect your soundcard. If the sound works in knoppix then at least you know that your soundcard isn't damaged.

I have had a lot of problems with alsa when i upgraded to 2.6, but 2.4.x & OSS works fine. Maybe you can use OSS instead of ALSA?

Just a couple of ideas for you to try... good luck!

Mark Byers.

Hmm. Your problem sounds very close to mine. I had sound working on my capture card for about 2 or 3 weeks. I decided to install a new HD and DVD drive. after connecting new hardware the sound from the capture card doenst work.

Then I removed the new hardware thinking there was some kind of conflict. This didnt help. So I took the card and put it in my wife's windoze box and the sound works.

The sound Im speaking of is sound from the capture card itself not the sound from the sound card. I can play an .ogg file through the sound card fine. I have triple checked everything I can think of. The sound levels are fine in alsamixer and they dont reallly matter right now since I have the speakers plugged directly into the capture card.

running v4lctl i can see that the mute option is off.

I cant find any errors in the log files and all modules are being loaded. I also cant remember changing anything but adding the new hardware.

Heres a little hardware and software list:

Athlon 1.3 Ghz
Sis based motherboard
pv951 capture card using bttv drivers
es1371 sound card

Kernel 2.6.5(gentoo)
alsa 1.0.3

If there is any information that you would like just let me know. I AM STUMPED!!!
