on-board sound card problems...

hi, i have a nvidia nforce 2 chipset on my motherboard, and the sound card doesnt work =/ Im running slackware 10.0. The sound card is is a AC'97 on-board card. I went to nvidia.com and tried to install the nforce drivers, but the sound card failed to install. I got the following error message:

Code:

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvsound.o'.  This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source
files.  Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files
for your kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you
have the 'kernel-source' rpm installed.  If you know the correct
kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source
path with the '--kernel-source-path' commandline option.

sound is a really nice feature and slackware is awesome....its the first one i found that looks good, runs good, and supports my video card, but i need sound!!! :( plz help me!

I have an ASUS laptop using what sounds like the same sound hardware -

ICHG 845G/GL Chipset AC'97

The hardware panel in Mandrake 10 uses the following:

Vendor: ‎Intel Corporation
Alternative drivers: ‎ali5455:i810_audio:nvaudio
Bus: ‎PCI
Bus identification: ‎8086:24c5:1043:1803
Location on the bus: ‎0:1f:5
Description: ‎ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller
Module: ‎snd-intel8x0
Media class: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

You might have some luck loading the kernel using the module snd-intel8x0.
I had considerable difficulty with older versions of Mandrake (9.1 I finally got to work, 9.2 and 10.0 work straight out of the box). Mind you, I am very much a learner rather than an expert!.

Had this problem and spent hours looking for the answer, I found it just playing around. Open KMix and go to the switches tab, look at the external amplifier and click on the LED to turn it off. Sound started when I clicked it.

Running Mandriva on a gateway M520 with a intel ich4 845g/gl AC97 sound card with the Module: ‎snd-intel8x0.
Hope this helps someone.
