? on accessing usb drive in SuSE 10 with udev

I have a SuSE10 server running command line only, no xwindows. I have to copy a 12g folder to a usb drive. I hooked up the drive to the usb connection and I thought that udev was supposed to auto see the device once plugged in. i cant find it at all. In the past on my SuSE8 boxes, I would attach a cd drive in a usb connection, run hotplug, edit the fstab file for the /media/cdrom to dev/sr0 & mount the /media/cdrom & I was done.

What do I need to do here since hotplug is no longer used?
I verified that udevd is running.
