Old Vector Linux trouble.

I need a historian!

I am new to Linux and have a Pentium 133MHz with 64Mb of ram. I selected Vector Linux V3.2 to install on this thing. Don't meet requirements of newer versions.

When I insert either an audio CD or MP3 data disk in the DVD/CD-RW combo drive (drive about a year old), xmms can’t find a thing to play, nor will it show a list of files.

I have been working with the good folks at VL forum, but no luck so far. My efforts show that if I type "dmesg |more" the drive is:" hdc: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive"

I found in File Manager that if I look under /dev, there is a cdrom file of Type Link to Block Device. When I select it, the bottom of the window shows:"cdrom -> /dev/hdd".

Is there a way in fstab file or with vasm to point the cdrom to hdc and not hdd?

thanks,

antiquepc

Post your fstab file for starters.

Havent used vectorlinux in a long time, but try using su and issuing the command.

Code:
mount /dev/cdwriter
If the cd mounts ok, and you can see the contents then, we know its mounting ok.

It may be that you need a utility to allow you to manually mount/unmount. Something like gkrellm would suffice for that purpose.

Alternatively to change the drive mapping in fstab, change:

Code:
/dev/cdwriter /mnt/cdwriter iso9660 defaults,noauto,ro,user 0 0

to

/dev/hdc /mnt/cdwriter iso9660 defaults,noauto,ro,user 0 0
But thinking about it, if linux says your cdrom is at hdd, then it probably is. If you change the jumper settings on it to Master, then linux should automatically change the /dev entry to hdc.
