Okay, what's the secret?
 

For giving a user access to the freaking CDROM and floppy in Mandrake 9? I searched through the past forum entries and tried adding user, to the fstab file. That didn't work. Then I tried going in through the Mandrake console to edit the user (to do that I have to go in as su and delete /etc/ptmp and /etc/gtmp or it locks me out). I added the user to cdrom group, also didn't work. The CDROM still shows as being locked to the user.

Anything I'm missing? Or time for a different distro?

I have user access to CDROM and floppy under Mandrake 9. I dont think I configured anything it was that way by default. However it does show as being locked when no media is in the drive.

Did you restart after you modified fstab? I'm sure there's another way to reset fstab without restarting though... could anyone tell me? thnx

Yup, restarted after modifying fstab. It was like working on a windoze machine for a few minutes. :)

There positively is media in the drive. A music CD in this case.

I can even go in through the removable media icon on the desktop and get an error message like this:

unable to enter file:/mnt/cdrom You do not have access rights to this location

But I can go into a console window and as su type:

chown username /dev/hdc

But when I type mount /mnt/cdrom as the user it takes the command but nothing happens.

So far in these conflicts between os and user, it's been user error. But this is one of those things that needs to work out of the box. Put a music cd in the drive and hear music.

you can not mount audio cd's.. it doesn't make any sense... i thought you said you had searched this site?

there is nothign to reset. fstab is addressed each time something is mounted, so changes are instant.

I did, but not specifically for music CD's. Why on earth would anyone with a PC background think they'd be treated an different?

I searching through the music CD posts but none of that is working either. It positively played under windoze, so this time I'm ruling out a hardware issue.

Well, so far the score is Linux 2 Me 0. It's sitting there happily playing a music CD.

Ah, this is so embarrasing...I don't think I'm even going to admit to what the real problem was.
