oh so new and oh so lost

I am a windows user and what version never really mattered to me. Having getting PO'ed at MS i have decided to go all through my house with Linux, and have run into a few problems.

1) i am so use to using winzip/winrar that when i see a taz.gaz file I have a brain fart and try looking for rpm's only (yes we can say cluck cluck)
So a link that really works and something an old man like me can understand.

By the way i am using rh8.0

2) and the biggest headache i am getting is from a 17 year old that loves to do alot of msn chat from the msn.com page. i get an error msg that ie does not support my brower and i need java, but when i look at the plugin list is says java installed. Or it one of these things that i still need windows to keep her happy?

3) how do i share folders from windoz on my home network, me running rh8 and 2 window machines.

4) watching vid clips from a website.

that is that i have right now, this is a great site but i get sooo lost and oh so much info.

So I will say thanks for any help or links that can be sent me way.

I have never used the MSN chat from their
homepage, but would it be compatible with
the MSN messenger protocol? There's a whole
host of tools for that, gaim, kopete, ...

On the windows machine use exploder,
right click what you intend to share and
share it :} ... if you don't have the option
install the MS network sharing tools.

No idea. Guess it depends on the format
of the clip. Plugger might be an option,
other than that, go have a look at the
plugin-page on netscape.com.

1. I guess you are asking how to use tar?

Just "man tar" for info, but usually when you download a tar.gz or a .tgz file, you just put it in a temp directory and "tar xvzf filename.tar.gz" and it will unzip and untar itself.. then you just check the README or INSTALL files for instructions. There are graphical ways to do this as well, but I forget them off the top of my head.

2. I use "gaim" to do MSN, ICQ, AOL, and even IRC chats.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...p?group_id=235

3. You need to setup Samba... best bet to get started is in the official RH v8 documents at:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...nfiguring.html

and then for more info:
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/

4. thats going to depend on the format the website is using... if its real player format... there is a version of that for Linux at:
http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html

if its Quicktime you can try this:
http://heroinewarrior.com/download.php3

If you want other options or need to access Windows Media Player files, you can take a look at http://www.codeweavers.com for there Crossover Plugin and Crossover Office Products. I have used them both to elminate Windows from my life completely at home and at work.

Also.. if you need some game playing support... check out http://www.transgraming.com ... I have bought this as well and its worth every penny.

Did you install java? You can get the latest version (1.4.2) from http://java.sun.com

mplayer and xine are the most popular video players. The easiest way to install them is with apt because it downloads all the necessary rpms automatically (for example, "apt-get mplayer"). There are browser plugins for both mplayer and xine.

<snip>

Java isn't the problem here. The site tries to install an ActiveX component that can't be installed on Linux. :(

Sorry about that. Been looking for a solution myself. :study:

Setting the browser ID to mimmick IE5 or IE6 doesn't work either. He really checks the operating system.

untar and MSN. My little bit

If you are using redhat you can right click the tar file and select extract to here.

For MSN you can use Kmerlin which comes with Redhat or you can use gaim.

I use gaim as I also have ICQ and Yahoo.

For IRC I use Xchat. Just in case you needed to know that ;)

I would also recommend getting apt-rpm. This will install programs and also check for dependencies and install them as well. Very helpfull. :)

Goodl Luck

PS. If you install RH9 I found samba a lot easier to setup ;-)

if you are so used to winzip, try gnozip or file-roller. this would provide you with a gui frontend for tar, tar.gz, bz, zip or whatnotarchivefile you can imagine.

a lot of people have problems starting to learn samba. to avoid this, read: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO.html

as for the msn chat, like a lot of people said, avoid using the one from the website. try an app instead. gaim is great for this but there are other apps you can try.

I just installed the mplayer plugin for mozilla a few days ago and it works great. It allows your web browser to view video in a multitude of formats including quicktime and windows media player. I've used in on Yahoo news and to view video clips from netflix.com. I use mandrake, but redhat 8 rpms for mplayer are here:

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i386.rpm.html

The mplayer plugin in and installation instructions are here:

http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/

By the way, if you have a video file on disk, mplayer allows you to watch it on your pc by opening a console and typing "mplayer <filename>". It works for watching dvds, vcds, avi, quicktime, mpeg, and many others.
