Odd 2" square in my Firefox Browser

a strange 2x2 inch square has appeared centered near the left side of my Firefox browser window. I can't say for sure exactly when I noticed it, but now I notice it appears occasionally everytime I run Ubuntu.

In case this is a common issue, the square is "filled" with a blue & black, 3 dimensional herringbone pattern.

Has this happened before ?

What can I do about it ?

Thanks in advance,

Johnny

This sounds really odd, I certianly haven't seen this before. If you haven't solved it already I'd be willing to take a run at tracking down what is causing it, But I'd definitely need more info. Like where exactly does it appear (Menu bar, Nav Bar, Bookmarks Bar, browser window, status bar). Are you using any themes or extensions, etc.

If you have solved the problem already I'd love to hear what the cause of it was so I can help others should they also encounter the problem.

Take Care,
Freemor

Thanks...

I'm in Ubuntu only occasionally, so I can post updates & provide additional information while I'm looking at it.

I havne't "solved" the problem, but after I posted it I noticed that it "sort of" went away. It went from the herringbone pattern I described to what "attempts" at lining out the 2 inch block, but the clear back & blue pattern hasn't reappeared.

If you can describe for me a means to take a screen shot in Ubuntu, I'll be glad to post an image here for starters.

for a screen shot just hit the PrtSc button and a dialogue should pop up asking where and how to save the screenshot.

screen shot

ok i'll try it now.

EDIT ***

Here's some pics:

I've been wondering if the 2" sqaure on the third image of the Ubuntu Home Page might be the cause of all the others.

Trying to make thumbs

I'm trying to make thumbs of the same images above. the tags seem to be missing...

20 minues later

Well I give up. I've seen others do the thumbs that expand full size when you click on them, but I can't seem to be able to do it.

Sorry the photos in the post above are not presented as well as they should be.

I saw the pics... Very strange. Quick Question. do you have a "userContent.css" file in your .mozilla/firefox/....../chrome/ folder? If so it could be an error in this that is causing the problem. I don't think it is related to the ubuntu home page. It is interesting that the ubuntu homepage changes the colour of it.. but I'm suspecting it is just showing through what ever the page sets as the background colour.

One thing you might want to try is to move your .mozilla file to some place safe and let firefox create a new one. If that clears up the problem we know it is just a problem with your local user settings and not a system wide problem.

Check the default color depth of your screen in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

I was facing the same problem and changing the value of
DefaultDepth in the "Screen" section from 16 to 24 fixed the
problem. No more black squares patterned or otherwise on my screen.

Evil. =)

Tryed turn off the effects, have checked the xorg.conf... Everything is working fine but the squares! Something gone wrong and I dont wanna to reinstall. Hope there is some solution. Thx.

Update

It's been a long time since I made the OP, and I haven't seen the problem in a very long time, but I thought I would add that my theory of why/how this occured is that at the time I was running my computer's on-board video overclocked, so if anyone is experiencing this problem they might want to consider that as a possible cause.
