NVIDIA...Parse error on line 13 of section Mandrake 9.0

Hi Friends,

I hope you can help me with this, because I really like Linux and want to learn more about it but, at this momment Iīm stuck.

Well i installed a BIOSTARGeFORCE 4mx 64MB graphic card in my pc wich is a
P4 1.6Ghz, 256RAM, 40Ghz, MOBO ECS M925
and I have installed Linux Mandrake 9.0 and WindowsME

I didnīt have any problems in WinME but in Linux I installed the driver:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run (with the ./ command before the file name)it seemed that everything went ok because there was the message:
Driver is now complete. Please update your XF86Config File as appropiate; se the file /user/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/Readme

After installing the driver i tried to run startx but, it just showed an error file so i tried reading the NVIDIA readme file; it said something like this:

If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

So i tried editing this file but, since i didnīt know about any command line editor like vi at that time, what i did was copying the XF86Config-4 file to mnt/windows folder and then i edited the file with wordpad then i renamed the original XF86Config-4 file and copied the one i had edited.

But I continue recieving errors

This is the log file before editing the XF86Config-4 file:

Your example doesn't show it, but the parser sees an extra " (quote) at the end/beginning of where you added the glx stuff. This might be a typo, or it might be one of those nice "features" MS likes to add to their stuff. Your best bet is to reedit the file with another text editor that doesn't add anything (any programmer's editor should work), or try using vi.

vi is more scary than hard, much like the command line is. There are only a few things you have to know, but you have to know them to do anything useful. On the other hand, there are thousands of optional features that make it a pleasure to use. (Same goes for emacs, but I prefer the simplicity of vi.)

Here's a crash course on what you can use to edit the file. See the help that comes with vi for more info.

vim yourfilename (you should see your file)

use the arrow keys to get the spot you want to work on.

hit 'a' to edit the file. you should see --Insert-- at the bottom of the screen

hit escape to exit the editor when done

type ':w' (colon and w) to save. you should see message at the bottom

hit ':q!" (colon and q and exclamation) to exit without saving, and you're done.

you can also type ':help' (colon help) for more help. :q exits you out of the help screen.

so, in a nutshell, the only ones you really need are :q! , :w , :a , and the escape key. :help is if you're interested in learning more.

Good luck!

Thumbs up It Just Worked !

Thank You Scott

I just did what you told me to do and it worked; I just edited my XF86Config-4 File (Fortunately I had backed up this file) editing the file with the vi command line editor was easier than what I thought. changing the line

driver "savage" to driver "nvidia"

was all I did and it worked

Now I can enjoy better graphics and the best of all... Linux.
