nVidia GeForce4 MX 420 Fedora 12 driver
 

I am trying to find a driver for a nVidia GeForce4 MX 420 for Fedora 12, I know its old, but I can't find a working driver for it. Thanks for your help.

I have the MX-440, and there's a driver on Nvidia's site for everything before a certain date. You get bold warnings not to update beyond that if you have old junk. I probably have the download somewhere if they have taken it down.

It has this problem; They use their own versions of certain files (libGL.so, etc) and these are now out of synch with the Mesa that would be distributed with Fedora 12. Ymmv. You need a compiled kernel source to get this installed. Copy the config from /boot, run make, but do not run make clean. Then install it.

I didn't update that box beyond Slackware 12 (& Fedora 9) because of it. The only thing that fell over was googleearth. Mind you, it still does 2200 FPS in glxgears. They are at the stage where they would be given away in breakfast cereal boxes all right.

I was able to find this driver for it http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._96.43.14.html I installed gcc and kernel-devel for it but it dies with the error:

hi i had the same problem with a different card and os but still nvidia.
i have to install it outside the grahpical environment and in the virtual i did it on Slackware 13.
they have all the drivers on there site for linux.

not sure about fedora12 but the nvidia.run was working on my geforce 2 mx 400 card on fedora 11
and the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.14-pkg1.run driver is working just fine in Arch - fully updated

I reinstalled that same file yeaterday, as I was trying some kernel wheeze on that box.
Get the kernel source which installs in /usr/src/linux-version. cp in the config from /boot/config-version and run make. That should take 15-20 minutes. THEN try the install.

It has precompiled modules for a number of kernels but they are back from the last millenium. It has not got stuff for modern kernels.So it should not have installed a module.

I installed an nVidia driver which, thinking about it, was almost certainly the wrong one (yes, I'm an idiot). Computer now hangs on startup, just after the splash screen.

Graphics card is an abit siluro version of the geforce4 (IIRC, geforce4 MX, I think 4400 but I'd have to check). I installed a driver that's too modern.

Any idea how I can remove it and revert to whatever was in use before?

Also ARE you using fedora 12 ?
if so DID you disable the nouveau nvidia driver that fedora is shipping with .

also redmittens be advised that you need to use the "96" nvidia.rpm or use the legacy nvidia.run for that old nvidia card
