Question nvidia driver installation error

Probably another newbie problem, Whenever i try to install the nvidia drivers for my geforce 2 ultra i get this message.
ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING
THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver
download page at nvidia website.

you have to exit the X server, you couldn't of read all that much because, or even search that much for that matter... :
a) its specified in the nvidia readme file
b) its a sticky thread in the newbie fourm

Thx for your reply. I am totally new to linux. What is a X server? how do you exit the x server. I do read a lot. But most of the stuff I read I do not comprende. Hopefully after a while maybe a year of reading I will start to understand. Sorry for my lameness. Sometimes I just like to cut to the chase and post a ? in the forum instead of spending hours hurting my eye ballz. Thx again for your interest in my problemo. Im going to ask my best friend Mr. Google about the x-server. Live long and prosper. V

Push ctrl + alt +tab + F1

When you get the prompt, login as root
then type:
$ init 3

login as root again if asked

then run your installer:
$ sh NVIDIA_Linux_etc.run

For nvidia, you will need to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file as described in NVidia's howto.

Then, either type

$ reboot
or
# startx

And rejoice when you get the nvidia splash screen.

Note: this is what I did using RH9 to get my NVidia onboard working. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
