Last I knew, a default installation of Debian 10 installs Gnome with GDM. If you added KDE and SDDM to such an installation, GDM might be retaining control as display manager on tty7, blocking a normal SDDM configuration. Is GDM installed? If yes, and you wish to use SDDM, purging GDM is probably the best way forward.

Some NVidia drivers require modeset and/or blacklisting nouveau. All other configurations I'm aware of require nomodeset not be used unless troubleshooting and/or attempting to repair an X problem, or low resolution is acceptable.

When I installed Debian, it asked me the options for installed display manager, and I selected KDE only and unchecked GNOME. I never installed KDE after the install had finished.
I know what you mean, as with older versions of debian, it would just go and install GNOME by default.

GDM definitely is not found when I tried running it, so assuming its not there.

I reckon it has something to do with the nouveau driver being disabled, when I manually disabled it, the NVIDIA installer still did not think it was disabled so perhaps there was some other configuration data elsewhere?

Probably best I just reinstall fresh anyway, just would be useful to know what I stuffed up.
