nvidia driver doesnt let me access new kernel
Hi there
I have a fresh install of Ubuntu Ultimate 1.4 did the updates used envy ( which comes with it ) and installed the Nvidia drivers then did a restart and it won't let me into the new Kernel *.*.16 instead it says: "Enable Alsa sequencer first by editing /etc/default/timidity" and that my nVidia is not configured correctly now I choose the old Kernel from the GRUB menu how to proceed? and what is that timidity ? ive googled but nowhere gives a direct help :s if anyone can help then that would be amazing my laptop is an Asus F5M series AMD sempron 3400+ graphics card nVidia Geforce GO 6100 RAM 1GB HDD 80GB thank you in advance |
Timidity is a MIDI player program. Unless you intend to play midi files, you can ignore that warning. What does the nVidia error say exactly? How did you install the nVidia drivers, direct from the nVidia website or through the package management system?

i wanted to do it directly through the nvidia website... i downloaded the the install file *.run i ran it in root terminal, it loads everything but then is says as followed
"You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com." so i typed " sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop " and then it shows "Enable Alsa sequencer first by editing /etc/default/timidity" but when i do it through the Envy program it installs it directly but when i reboot it gives a "fatal sever error no screen(s) found" |
any time you upgrade your kernel you need to recompile the nvidia module for the new kernel version. so if you can boot to the new kernel and run envy again that should resolve your nvidia driver issue.
I install the nvidia drivers manually using module-assistant, it's simple to update them after a kernel update.. envy I've never used, so I can't give you any pointers on that. can you just run the envy script again ? or is it GUI only ? Care to post your xorg.conf file, and the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE ? |
I always prefer to install nVidia drivers through the package management system for exactly this sort of reason, it saves a lot of hassle when the kernel gets upgraded. Never used (or heard of) Ubuntu Ultimate though, ordinary Ubuntu works fine for me so that's what I use.
