The easy way would be to simply go to: system > administration > hardware_drivers, and install the nvidia driver if it is listed there, which it should be. See this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia
Write back if you need more help.

Get it from here, by selecting your model.

Just a few small words of advice regarding the above methods of installation:

This is much easier to maintain (since you can easily toggle it on/off), but in my experience it doesn't always install the most current driver. This might no longer be the case, however.

The advantage to this method is that you'll typically be getting the latest driver. However, the disadvantage (again, this is just drawing from my own experience) is that you'll have to re-run the NVIDIA*.run file every time you recieve a kernel update (it needs to rebuild the module dependencies each time...presumably this is done automatically if the driver is installed via the package manager).

It is still the case. The newest nvidia driver in the Ubuntu 10.04 repos is nvidia-current, which is the nvidia 195.36 driver:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/nvidia-current
The nvidia driver is usually not updated in stable releases of Ubuntu. There will likely be a newer nvidia driver in Ubuntu 10.10.

This is true. Anytime there is a kernel update for Ubuntu the nvidia driver is automatically reinstalled if you have installed the driver from the Ubuntu repos. If you install the driver from nvidia.com then you are on your own here.

If the Ubuntu driver-installer has the latest drivers doesn't matter in this case, because the MX4000 is not supported in the latest drivers. It is a modified Geforce 4 MX 4XX, so the latest drivers for this card are from the 90s-series.

nvidia DID a last and i think LAST update the the 96. drivers
the update only removed a warning and crash if the xorg version is above 1.7

it mostly works with xorg 1.8 but will be very hard to maintain
get the last from nvidia 's ftp site and DO NOT delete it copy it to / and reinstall it for every kernel and x11/xorg update
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/96.43.18/
