Just a few small words of advice regarding the above methods of installation:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/nvidia-current The nvidia driver is usually not updated in stable releases of Ubuntu. There will likely be a newer nvidia driver in Ubuntu 10.10. Quote:

If the Ubuntu driver-installer has the latest drivers doesn't matter in this case, because the MX4000 is not supported in the latest drivers. It is a modified Geforce 4 MX 4XX, so the latest drivers for this card are from the 90s-series.

nvidia DID a last and i think LAST update the the 96. drivers
the update only removed a warning and crash if the xorg version is above 1.7 it mostly works with xorg 1.8 but will be very hard to maintain get the last from nvidia 's ftp site and DO NOT delete it copy it to / and reinstall it for every kernel and x11/xorg update ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/96.43.18/ |
